Longarm Quilting Prep Checklist

Preparing your quilt before drop-off or shipping helps ensure the best possible quilting results and keeps your project moving smoothly through the process.

Please review the checklist below before submitting your quilt.

Step 1 – Prepare Your Quilt Top

Before sending your quilt:

  • Ensure all seams are securely sewn.

  • Press all seams flat.

  • Make sure borders are applied evenly and lay flat.

  • Trim all loose threads from the back of the quilt top.

A well-prepared quilt top helps achieve a smoother finish and more accurate quilting.

Step 2 – Prepare the Backing

Your backing should be ready before submission.

Please ensure:

  • The backing is 4–6 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides.

  • Seams are pressed open.

  • The backing is square.

  • There are no holes, weak spots, or damaged areas.

  • Directional prints are clearly marked.

Proper backing preparation allows the quilt to be loaded correctly onto the longarm machine.

Step 3 – Batting Requirements

Before drop-off:

  • Confirm the batting meets the required size.

  • Clearly identify the batting provided.

  • Note any special preferences, including:

    • Low loft

    • High loft

    • Fiber type

    • Any other batting specifications

Step 4 – Thread & Design Preferences

Let us know your preferences before quilting begins.

Please include:

  • Preferred thread color (or simply indicate "Quilter's Choice")

  • Preferred quilting design or style

  • Any areas of the quilt requiring special attention or care

Clear instructions help ensure the finished quilt matches your vision.

Step 5 – What Can Slow Down Turnaround?

The following issues may delay completion:

  • Backing or batting that is too small

  • Missing or unclear quilting preferences

  • Quilt tops requiring repairs

  • Last-minute design changes

Preparing everything in advance helps us begin quilting without unnecessary delays.

Step 6 – What Helps Your Quilt Look Its Best?

For the best finished result, we recommend:

  • Square, evenly pieced quilt tops

  • Smooth, generously sized backing

  • Clear thread and quilting design preferences

  • Trusting the professional judgment of your quilter when appropriate

These simple steps contribute to a beautiful finished quilt you'll enjoy for years to come.
